For years I have been lucky enough to be capable of painting my own home.  It’s a brick ranch, but it has a lot of cedar trim along with three composite siding areas, two of which can only be accessed from the roof.  The siding is the result of high ceilings inside which mandated a very nasty roof pitch.  It’s not an easy house to paint.

Time marches on and these days I’m smart enough to know I don’t belong on a twenty two foot ladder any more.  Walking that roof is something I never did, even when I was younger (I had some friends help me out on that one).  This year I realized the entire job needed to be farmed out.  I asked for bids from several companies and I was lucky enough to add American Painters to that list.

I was immediately comfortable with Ken who came out to inspect the property.  He took down all the details and was very comprehensive.  He asked what I thought were the right questions in terms of what needed to be painted and how.  I was given a written estimate and within a day or two I asked him  to do the job.  I paid and 10% deposit to be placed on the schedule.  Within a week or two Ken called me to establish a start date.  It was that simple.

A small crew showed up to pressure wash my home and completed the job from top to bottom in a few hours.  They let the wood dry for a day or two, then a new, larger, crew showed up to do the caulking, priming, and final painting.  That group was eight or nine young people, all very professional and very efficient.  They carefully caulked everything including seams I have ignored for years.  I had a small area of rot that needed patching.  I cut the patch and they applied it perfectly.  The paint I choose claimed to be ‘self priming’, but they primed all the bare spots regardless.  Many of the surfaces like the eves they sprayed with professional equipment lending speed to the operation and producing a smooth, even surface.  Areas like shutters and gutters were hand painted with amazing care.  Watching their progress, I soon realized these folks simply loved what they were doing and in the end I knew they had taken the effort and care to paint my house exactly as if it were their own.

I highly recommend American Painters.  If you have a project don’t be afraid to give them a call.  The next time I need painting I doubt I’ll bother bidding it out.  This is my ‘go to’ company from now on for any painting job I don’t want to handle myself.

I had planned on staining my deck this fall, but my ability to work was degraded due to a round of hand surgery.  Rather than wait another year I decided to give American Painters a new contract to get the job done and my wood protected.  They performed with the same level of care and professionalism I experienced with the house paint job.

They began by removing all the furniture and worked with me to clear shrub growth as needed.  Next came pressure washing, and after letting the wood dry they began sanding.  I have had problems in the past with latex stain peeling—and now I know why.  I usually do a little light scuff sanding before putting down the new layers of stain.  I never did the kind of detailed prep work I watched these folks do.  The crew sanded for hours attacking the layers of old semi-solid stain buildup.  I watched them use paint scrapers between the boards to clean and eliminate old runs.  When they were done it was mostly bare wood out there.  I also had them do the trellises and pergola and all were equally prepped.

The next day they came back and masked with plastic sheeting, then applied two coats of stain.  The board gaps were individually sprayed and the tops of the deck boards brushed.  The next day a smaller crew came back out to inspect and touch up as needed.  Finally they put all the furniture back.

They pressure washed everything before beginning to paint. That alone made the house look so much better. They repaired small damages, and even caulked areas that needed repairs. They took the time to mask everything and even covered the unfinished porch to protect it while painting. Amazing job. Very thorough, fast, and complete. They communicated status daily and worked every day from project start until finish.
